Rana N. Ahmad, MD, FACS has been a member of the Spokane Medical Community since 1997. Dr. Ahmad attended the University of North Dakota, working with the Affiliated Hospital Program, Department of Surgery from 1991 to 1997. Dr. Ahmad has an area of specialized interest in oncology, laparoscopic and gastrointestinal surgery. Dr. Ahmad is the chairman of the surgery department at Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Ahmad is actively involved in medical teaching as volunteer faculty for Deaconess Residency program. He is an also an active staff member of Holy Family Hospital and Sacred Heart Medical Center. Timothy W. Bax, MD, FACS has practiced general surgery in the Spokane area since 1998. Dr. Bax came to Spokane after completing his surgical training at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Bax also completed an additional year of training in Portland in the area of Minimally Invasive Surgery. Dr. Bax's surgical practice encompasses all areas of general surgery with an emphasis on laparoscopically performed procedures. He has a special interest in diseases of the stomach and esophagus including surgery for heartburn and for stomach and esophageal cancer. Steven R. Beyersdorf, MD, FACS has practiced surgery in Spokane since 1987. He received degrees from Washington State University, Emory University, and the University of Washington School of Medicine before completing his surgery residency at the University of Utah. He is the Director of Trauma at Deaconess Medical Center and has served as President of the Medical Staff of Deaconess Medical Center and President of the Washington State Chapter of the American College of Surgeons in the past. While practicing a broad range of surgery, he has special interest in inflammatory bowel disease, colon and rectal surgery and diseases of the breast. J. Courtney Clyde, MD, FACS has practiced general surgery in the Spokane area since 1990, and is the past President of the Valley Hospital and Medical Center Medical Staff. Dr. Clyde has extensive training in image-guided biopsies of the breast and Breast Cancer Treatment. Dr. Clyde is one of the few mammosite trained surgeons in the area. Adam H. Juviler, MD is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He spent six years training in general surgery at the University of Vermont, and thereafter completed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery in Seattle. Dr Juviler is specially qualified to diagnose and manage problems of the anus, rectum, colon and small intestine, including hemorrhoids, prolapse, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease, and including performing colonoscopy. Paul H. Lin, MD, FACS has practiced general and vascular surgery in the Spokane area since 1992. Mark P. MacFarlane, MD, FACS has practiced in the Spokane area since 1998. He completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of California, San Francisco. In addition, he has the distinction of having completed additional extensive fellowship training in two areas of specialization. The first fellowship was dedicated to the area of cancer at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health where he trained in cancer of the liver, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract and breast with a special emphasis on endocrine tumors of the thyroid, parathyroid, and pancreas, in addition to melanoma. His second fellowship, at the University of Washington, dealt with the area of minimally invasive surgery that is so vastly expanding today. With these minimally invasive skills, he has concentrated on performing surgery on a minimally invasive approach, which otherwise in the past have been performed through large incisions. These include, but are not limited to surgery of the colon, gastrointestinal tract, spleen, liver, adrenal glands and esophagus. Dr, MacFarlane also has a busy practice in the area of minimally invasive surgery for gastro-esophageal reflux disease. He is also performing laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery for appropriate patients with morbid obesity. He is on active staff at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Deaconess Medical Center, Valley Hospital and Medical Center and has courtesy privileges at Holy Family Hospital. M. Shane McNevin, MD, FASCRS attended Wayne State University School of Medicine, graduating with high distinction. He completed his internship and residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Dr. McNevin also has completed fellowship training at the University of Minnesota in the area of Colon and Rectal Surgery. This special training allows Dr. McNevin to provide expertise in the diagnosis, medical management and surgical treatment of colorectal and anal tumors, inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor disorders. Dr. McNevin currently serves as the Co-medical director of the Providence Continence Center, Cancer Liaison at Holy Family Hospital and the NW Region Advocate for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG). Anders R. Merg, MD received a bachelor in science from the University of Minnesota, followed by a doctorate in medicine at the University of Wisconsin. His general surgery training was completed at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. After practicing general surgery in the Spokane area for one and half years he returned to the University of Iowa, pursuing his interest in oncology, as a surgeon in the division of surgical oncology. This led to a two year surgical oncology fellowship at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. Having developed an adoration of the Inland Northwest, Dr. Merg returned joining the Surgical Specialists of Spokane and as the program director of the Providence Cancer Center in the summer of 2006. His surgical oncology interests include hepatobiliary, pancreatic, gastrointestinal, sarcoma, and melanoma cancers. Michael R. Moore, MD, FACS has practiced general surgery in the Spokane community since 1991. He attended the University of Washington, then completed his residency in general surgery at Boston University. Dr. Moore served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, working as a trauma surgeon during Operation Desert Storm. Dr. Moore has special interests in gastrointestinal, trauma, and oncologic surgery and repair of complex abdominal wall hernias. Jonathan M. Nickoloff, MD is a native of Spokane. He is a graduate of Washington State University and earned his medical degree at Creighton University. He completed his internship and residency at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, and spent an additional year of training at the University of Massachusetts in General Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Nickoloff’s surgical practice encompasses all areas of general surgery including laparoscopic procedures. He has special interest in treating lung cancer and has been trained in minimally invasive techniques. Daniel M. Bates, MD, FACS practiced in the Spokane area since 1978 and had been a member of Surgical Specialists since 1979. Prior to that, Dr. Bates served as the Chief Resident of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Bates was board certified in surgery and a fellow in the American College of Surgery. Dr. Bates was an active staff member at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Deaconess Medical Center, Valley Hospital and Medical Center and at Holy Family Hospital. Dr. Bates had extensive training and experience in abdominal and breast cancer surgery. He had a particular interest in the treatment of breast cancer, abdominal malignancies and hernias. Dr. Bates retired from medical practice December of 2006.

Gary H. Matsumoto, MD, FACS was a member since 1979 of Spokane Surgical Group, Inc. which merged in January of 2005 with other surgical groups to become Surgical Specialists of Spokane. Dr Matsumoto attended Tufts-New England Medical Center where he completed general surgery residency with a Vascular Surgery Fellowship. Dr Matsumoto was well known for his treatment and care of thyroid and parathyroid afflictions. Dr Matsumoto retired from medical practice December of 2005.
